Monk's Head Arts and Crafts Mission Bench
(Item: 0135)
Offered is this very unique Arts and Crafts Monk's Head Bench with leather back, rope twist arms, legs and stretchers, cane seating and a leather cushion. The arms of this bench, from the late 19th or early 20th century, are carved into two monks, complete with hoods. I believe the wood to be oak and the detail on the bench is wonderful. It is an authentic Arts and Crafts piece, highlighting a common theme during that time period which comes from the romantic legend that Mission Furniture in the West, rather than England, was the model for much of the Mission furniture made during the late 1800s and early 1900s in the United States. This theme evolved since the furniture was simple enough to have been made by the monks.
This bench measures 60 inches across, 35 inches tall and 20 1/2 inches deep.
Condition is very good; there is a small bit of trim missing at the bottom of each arm, unnoticeable unless you are looking closely and easily repaired if you wish. The caning has been replaced and the back and cushion are in good condition.
Wonderful twist arms, legs and stretcher with great detail on the monks!
