1700s Chippendale Drop Front Desk
(Item: 0086)
Offered is this authentic American 1700s Chippendale Drop Front Desk in authentic and in excellent condition. It was made either during or very near the Chippendale period. It is constructed incredibly well - made of mahogany and native woods(the second picture is too yellow - it is closer to the other pictures, with brown and red tones, it has four hand-dovetailed drawers and hand-carved slots for the locks on each drawer. (No keys were found, unfortunately.) The desk holders have to be manually slid out to hold the drop-front desk and the slots and molding inside the desk are obviously handmade also. The drawers have had the hardware replaced somewhere along the line, as the holes inside the drawers where the old hardware were are still visible. The back is its original wood - the old rectangular nails are still holding it together, 200 years after it was made. It is on castors now, but we can remove these for you if you choose. It has bracket feet. The edging was done correctly, as they did in the 1700s. This is a beautiful simple desk, probably provincial, done by a craftsman. It is in excellent condition - there is a small piece of the edging of the top drawer missing and what looks like very faint small old ink stains (VERY faint) on the front of the desk. The desk measures 37 inches wide, 40 inches tall and is 20 inches deep. This beautiful desk will add character and soul to any home. It is my pleasure to travel many miles and spend many hours to offer furniture of this quality to online shoppers at a reasonable cost - furniture not usually found at your local antiques shop or at any shows other than the premier shows at a very high cost. My reputation is my most important asset - I will work tirelessly to assure your satisfaction. Please call or email me with any questions.
